Why Knight Locksmiths Homeowners Choose Kwikset Locksmith

Knight Locksmiths provides independent Kwikset locksmith service in Knight Locksmiths, TX, covering Pasadena Kwikset service, rekeys, repairs, and full replacements on the brand’s residential hardware. We work on SmartKey deadbolts, Kevo smart locks, and Signature Series handlesets every week, which means we know the difference between a cylinder that needs a $25 rekey and a lock body that’s done. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with or endorsed by Kwikset, so our recommendations are based on what actually holds up on a door in this climate, not what a manufacturer’s brochure says. Call (833) 589-8049 for a straight answer on your Kwikset lock.

Why Trust Knight Locksmiths for Your Kwikset Locksmith?

Glen Pickett, our owner and lead locksmith, has been working locks in this area long enough to recognize a Kwikset failure by feel before the cylinder is even off the door. He trained in locksmithing and security systems through the vocational program at Alvin Community College, then spent the better part of three decades working locks before founding Knight Locksmiths. Ask him what a worn SmartKey sidebar pin feels like under a pick, and he’ll tell you it’s like a key turning through sand. That’s the kind of detail you only get from someone who has done this work hundreds of times, not from a call center reading a script.

We stock genuine Kwikset cylinders, SmartKey rekey kits, and replacement bolts so we can resolve most issues in the first visit. When a lock body is still sound, we use OEM parts. When a builder-grade Kwikset has a stripped bolt and cracked pot-metal housing, we say so plainly and recommend replacement rather than charging you for a repair that won’t hold. Our only loyalty is to hardware that actually works on your door.

We’ve rekeyed, repaired and replaced enough Kwikset hardware across the Knight Locksmiths area to know exactly which cylinders bind, which SmartKey wafers fail, and which finishes hold up. That knowledge comes from the bench, not a badge.

Common Kwikset Locksmith Problems We Fix in Knight Locksmiths

  • SmartKey cylinders that refuse the rekey tool or reject the key. The SmartKey system uses a sidebar mechanism with small spring-loaded pins. After years of use, those pins wear and no longer engage the rekey tool correctly. Homeowners often make it worse by rekeying with the wrong tick position, which jams the sidebar and strands the lock on the old key. We fix this by pulling the cylinder, inspecting the sidebar pins, and installing a fresh Kwikset SmartKey cylinder matched to a new key. Call (833) 589-8049 and we’ll tell you if it’s a rekey or a cylinder replacement.
  • Kevo and Kevo Convert dead battery behavior and failed Bluetooth handshake. The Kevo locks in the Knight Locksmiths area fail most often after an app update breaks the Bluetooth pairing, leaving the lock unresponsive to the phone. A dead battery during a lockout makes it worse because the interior thumbturn won’t turn without power on some older Kevo units. We check the battery contacts, re-pair the lock app, and replace internal motors when they stop throwing the bolt.
  • Builder-grade 660 and 665 deadbolts with ovaled strike plates. The zinc bolt and strike plate on cheap builder-grade Kwikset deadbolts wear together over a few years, especially on doors used daily. The bolt no longer seats cleanly, the door rattles, and eventually the latch won’t hold at all. In Knight Locksmiths, we see this on rental properties and front doors that get used hundreds of times a day. We fix it by replacing the worn bolt and installing a new strike plate, then tuning the plate so the deadbolt seats without the door being shoved.
  • Exterior finishes pitting and keyway binding from corrosion. Knights, TX humidity eats at Venetian Bronze and Satin Nickel finishes on Kwikset exterior locks. After a few humid seasons, the finish pits and the keyway binds as corrosion builds inside the cylinder. We disassemble, clean, lubricate, and replace the cylinder when the corrosion has damaged the pin chambers. A new cylinder brings the lock back to smooth operation.
  • Kwikset 980 double-cylinder deadbolts that jam on the interior side. The 980 uses a keyed cylinder on both sides. When the interior cylinder binds, the thumbturn is useless and the lock is stuck. We pull the interior cylinder, clean and re-pin it, and on older units we replace both cylinders so the lock operates the same on both sides. If you’re locked out and the deadbolt is a double-cylinder, call us at (833) 589-8049.

Kwikset Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

Knight Locksmiths uses genuine Kwikset cylinders, SmartKey rekey kits, and replacement bolts when the lock body is sound. Genuine parts match Kwikset’s tolerances and finish codes, which matters when you’re trying to keep the hardware color-matched across a whole house. We turn to quality aftermarket cylinders only where they outperform the OEM part, which is rare but happens on high-wear entry doors. If a builder-grade Kwikset has a stripped bolt or cracked pot-metal housing, we tell you straight it’s a replacement, not a repair. No upselling a rekey onto a dead lock. Call (833) 589-8049 and we’ll tell you which one you actually need, and what the parts cost before we touch the door.

Our Kwikset Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We remove the Kwikset lock from the door and inspect the cylinder, bolt, and strike plate. For SmartKey locks, we test the rekey mechanism and sidebar engagement. For Kevo units, we check battery state, Bluetooth pairing, and motor throw. Figure out the problem first. Everything else follows.
  2. 2
Repair or replacement. We rekey or replace cylinders with genuine Kwikset parts when the housing is sound. If the lock body is stripped or cracked, we recommend a new unit and give you the honest reason why.
  3. 3
Testing. We reinstall, cycle the lock multiple times, and test the key from both sides. For SmartKey, we run the rekey process again to confirm the sidebar resets correctly. For Kevo, we test the app and physical key override.
  4. 4
Warranty. We stand behind our work with a service warranty. Genuine Kwikset parts carry the manufacturer’s own warranty, and our labor is covered by Knight Locksmiths.

Kwikset Products We Service & Install in Knight Locksmiths

Knight Locksmiths services and installs the full residential Kwikset line: SmartKey deadbolts from the Security Series, Kwikset Kevo and Kevo Convert smart locks, Signature Series handlesets and deadbolts, and the 660/665 and 980 single- and double-cylinder deadbolts, with Kwikset in Deer Park available as well. We also work on Kwikset knobs, levers, and entry locksets, and we rekey them to match your existing key or a new one. We stock SmartKey cylinders and rekey kits locally so you’re not locked out waiting on a part from a distributor.

We Also Service These Brands

Our Kwikset work sits alongside service on Schlage mechanical deadbolts and Medeco high-security cylinders. We’re a multi-brand shop, not a single-brand dependent one, so when a home mixes Kwikset knobs with a Schlage deadbolt, we can rekey or repair both in one visit. The lock expertise to handle anything from a standard Kwikset to a Medeco high-security system.

FAQs – Kwikset Locksmith Service in Knight Locksmiths

Is Knight Locksmiths authorized by Kwikset?

No. Knight Locksmiths is an independent locksmith shop, not affiliated with or endorsed by Kwikset. We source genuine Kwikset parts through standard distribution channels and install them to the manufacturer’s specifications. That independence means our recommendations are based on what holds up on a door, not what a manufacturer wants us to push.

Can you rekey a Kwikset SmartKey lock yourself, or does it need a locksmith?

You can rekey a SmartKey lock yourself with the rekey tool and a new key, as long as the cylinder is in good shape and you follow the correct tick position. When the SmartKey cylinder has worn sidebar pins, the rekey tool will refuse to seat or the lock will reject the new key, and that’s when you need a locksmith. We see this on SmartKey locks that are five or more years old in the Knight Locksmiths area. Call (833) 589-8049 if your SmartKey won’t accept a rekey. We’ll pull the cylinder and tell you if it’s a rekey or a replacement.

My Kwikset Kevo won’t connect to the app after an update – is it dead?

Usually not. The Kevo loses Bluetooth pairing after app updates more often than it fails mechanically. We re-pair the lock to the phone, check the battery contacts, and test the motor. If the motor won’t throw the bolt, the lock is done and we recommend a new unit, but that’s the exception. Most Kevo connectivity issues in Knight Locksmiths are software or battery, not hardware.

Is a builder-grade Kwikset 660 worth rekeying, or should I upgrade?

If the 660 deadbolt is still latching securely and the bolt isn’t stripped, a rekey is fine and costs less than a new lock. If the bolt is worn oval, the strike plate is loose, or the housing is cracked, rekeying won’t fix the mechanical wear. We tell you which one you actually need. When a 660 is on a high-use front door in this climate, we often recommend a 980 or SmartKey deadbolt as a longer-term fix, but we never push an upgrade onto a lock that’s still sound.

Do you stock Kwikset SmartKey cylinders so I’m not locked out waiting on a part?

Yes. Knight Locksmiths stocks Kwikset SmartKey cylinders and rekey kits locally, so most SmartKey repairs and rekeys in Knight Locksmiths are completed the same visit, including Kwikset service in South Houston. Call (833) 589-8049 and we’ll confirm we have your cylinder type before we dispatch.

Can you match my new Kwikset key to the rest of the house so one key works everywhere?

Yes, as long as the other locks use Kwikset’s keyway. We rekey the new lock and all existing Kwikset cylinders to a single key, and we can also re-pin Schlage locks if the house mixes brands. One key for every door is something we do regularly in Knight Locksmiths, along with Shoreacres Kwikset service. Call (833) 589-8049 for a flat quote on whole-house rekeying.
